Selfishness is that attitude of being concerned with one’s own interests above the interests of others. However, the Bible commands us to “do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4, NASB).
It’s interesting to note in this passage that Paul compares selfishness to “empty conceit”—a term that could be translated “vanity” or “arrogance.” It refers to an overly high opinion of oneself. Selfishness, then, is akin to narcissism, and excuses are a narcissist’s best friend.
Selfishness or empty conceit is often expressed by building up oneself while tearing down someone else. It is one of the “works of the flesh” according to Galatians 5:20. It leads to “disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16). Selfishness caused the children of Israel to “willfully put Elohim to the test by demanding the food they craved” (Psalm 78:18). Selfishness causes those with means to show no compassion for others in need. (1 John 3:17) Selfishness ruins friendships (Proverbs 18:1), hinders prayer (James 4:3), and is the product of earthly wisdom (James 3:13-14).
The opposite of selfishness is also found in Philippians 2: being united with Yeshua, having tenderness and compassion, and “being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose” (Philippians 2:2).
Combating the sin of selfish ambition requires genuine humility. Unpretentious humility restores and grows relationships. Being humble involves having a true perspective about ourselves in relation to Yehovah. “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith YHVH has given you” (Romans 12:3).
Prayer and a love of Scripture are necessary as well. “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain” (Psalm 119:36). Love covers a multitude of sins, including selfishness. If we are truly “devoted to one another in brotherly love” (Romans 12:10), we cannot be selfish. Having the attitude of Yeshua is to demonstrate tenderness and compassion for all those we come in contact with.
Another sure cure for selfishness is to know where our treasure is. The Christian Israelite holds the things of this world loosely because he is laying up “treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-21). He knows it is “more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35), and he lives according to the truth that “YHVH loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Once any true, genuine, and real believer – rather than being a fake through words this world of modern Christianity has become so good at – understands this truth on love for others from scripture, they will also know that Yehovah cannot be known through uncountable words of love, song, tears, and even waving their arms towards heaven, when they themselves have shown no action towards loving others as they love themselves being the royal law.
“If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.” James 2:8
A man or woman will say I love you to their spouse or lover – and then go to have many more, and this world of Christianity is no different when saying how much they love Jesus Christ and God the Father while not even knowing their proper names;
Plus taking part in pagan holidays like Christmas, Easter, and many more when living in total disobedience through showing absolutely zero love for Yehovah or others in doing as the word instructs: thus committing spiritual adultery in the worst possible way as made very clear in Hosea.
This link below that I wrote over 4 years ago reveals through scripture just how Yahovah views all shepherds, pastors, ministers, reverends, bishops, and every religious title along with all congregations — plus many verses on how to gain YHVH’s mercy during the coming worst timesoftrouble ever before on this planet earth.

[ Yodh. ] Your hands have made me and established me; Give me understanding and a teachable heart, that I may learn Your commandments.
How can we have a teachable heart when it has been given through trust in man only to become twisted, clogged, and polluted with human doctrines and traditions not written in the words we are to live by?
After 15 years of private Bible studies and keeping to myself, in 2005 I went to Iraq as a civilian welder for the US Army, and after 6 months took a two-week rest in the Philippines; it was right then that I planned on returning.
On December 3rd, 2006 being exactly one year later, I arrived in Manila on a one way ticket from Chicago’s O’Hare to begin a different way of life which taught me how to live on faith through dependence on our Creator, and become disassociated with worldly ways, beliefs, and religions – while also – my wife and I living a decade lacking all basic needs – therefore, my experience with all Christianity has been seeing them just as our Father through pride with greed while coveting all earthly and material items for themselves – and showing no compassion in any way whatsoever for those crying out to this world for any small help that hear not through being lost in their own darkness – and completely unprepared for their coming calamity when Yahovah will laugh at them and not hear their prayers just as they heard not the needs of others. Proverbs 1:26, Lamentations 3:8, 44, etc.
